TCL Communication Launches BlackBerry KEYone

TCL Communication launched the BlackBerry KEYone smartphone last week following the inking of a licensing agreement with BlackBerry in late 2016.

TCL chairman and CEO Tomson Li said that BlackBerry licensed its security software and service suite, as well as related brand assets, to TCL Communication, who would design, manufacture, sell and provide customer support for BlackBerry-branded mobile devices.

The latest BlackBerry product is one of TCL’s highlights at MWC 2017. The new product became an instant hit as soon as it was launched and received nine awards from media organizations, making it one of the most highlighted products at MWC.

The BlackBerry KEYone receved its first honor, the Top Picks award, from the authoritative UK-based technology media brand Tech Advisor, at the MWC 2017. It was also the first award that Tech Advisor gave out at the event.

Alltel ships BlackBerry Pearl 8130

Alltel has shipping its version of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, the first CDMA-capable Pearl. The candybar design has all the features of the full version including true GPS, which can be used either through Resarch in Motion’s own BlackBerry Maps feature or through a subscription to a service like TeleNav. Unlike Sprint or Verizon models, though, its music can be sideloaded through a custom program dubbed Jump Music instead of Windows Media Player or manually copying files, helping to justify the phone’s microSDHC slot and cards over 8GB.

The 2-megapixel camera, 3G Internet access through EVDO, and native headphone jack remain in place from the fundamental design. Alltel carries the phone in black trim for $150 with a two-year plan but also offers it for $480 without any contract.

RIM Launches Facebook for BlackBerry

Research in Motion at the CTIA mobile expo today introduced Facebook for BlackBerry (registration required), a new app that gives users of most any recent version of the smartphone faster access to the social networking tools without using a browser. The platform takes advantage of the BlackBerry’s network to “push” updates to and from the phone in real time: Facebook members will receive messages and updates almost immediately, RIM says. The software also takes advantage of camera-equipped BlackBerries and lets users both upload and tag photos without having to first sync with a computer.

The new software lands first at T-Mobile in the US but will be available for free to any of the carrier’s subscribers that use a modern BlackBerry device with the service. The download should be available as of today, RIM says.
